Reducing Traffic Accidents

Question:

Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion. (250 words)

Answer:

In recent years, high numbers of accidents related to traffic have led to the government implementing strict punishments for those who violate driving rules and regulations. Regarding this, some people agree that punishment is an effective tool to reduce accidents, while others disagree.

People who think that strict punishments are powerful enough to solve the traffic accidents have the assumption that negligent drivers will be more aware of their driving. These drivers are more likely to reduce their speed and follow the traffic signs since severe punishments await them if they are being irresponsible. Most importantly, strict punishments can teach drivers indirectly that a human’s life is very valuable and worthy of respect and consideration.

In contrast, some people do not think that such severe punishments should be implemented. The government should not go that far as other less strict punishments can also have good effects. It is considered more fair and efficient, yet effective if the drivers who break the law are fined. However, the fines should not be a large amount, but enough to make the drivers feel punished. It is not that the drivers want to harm other people; they are only speeding a bit.

As far as I am concerned, even though strict punishments are necessary for reducing as well as preventing more traffic accidents, it is more acceptable that the punishments are levelled respective to what kinds of offences the drivers have committed.
